Built in 1969, Ngulia Safari Lodge sits perched on the Ndawe Escarpment just below the Ngulia Hills, with some of the most striking views in Tsavo West. Every direction offers game viewing, from your room’s balcony, to the open-air restaurant, to a set of large binoculars trained on the Rhino Sanctuary below, a genuine alternative to a long drive when you’re specifically hoping to spot rhino.
The lodge’s floodlit waterhole draws a near-permanent population of elephant and buffalo, visible from most of the 52 rooms, each with a balcony overlooking the wilderness. It’s a rustic, straightforward property rather than a luxury one, well suited to groups, retreats, and travelers who prioritize the view and the wildlife over polished extras.
What to Expect
Game drives. The drive to the lodge itself takes in Mzima Springs, the Shetani Lava Flow, and Chaimu Hill, effectively a game drive before you’ve even checked in, with your own driver guide throughout your stay.
Rhino Sanctuary viewing. Large binoculars at the lodge give a direct view over the Rhino Sanctuary, a good alternative to a dedicated drive if time is limited.
Dining. An open-air restaurant overlooking the floodlit waterhole, meals served buffet style, with bush breakfasts, sundowner dinners and picnic lunches available on request.
Facilities. Balcony rooms overlooking the wilderness and waterhole, and panoramic views in every direction.
