Rusinga and Mfangano Islands on Lake Victoria are popular with well heeled game fishermen.
Rusinga is connected to the mainland by a man-made causeway.
It is the birthplace of Tom Mboya, a political hero destined for a meteoric career until he was shot dead by the police in 1969 during political unrest. His mausoleum is on the northern side of the island.
The island is also rich in fossils and the skull of ‘proconsul Africanus’ was found here by anthropologist Mary Leakey. This anthropoid ape lived on the island three million years ago.
Over 100 species of bird have been recorded around the island and other residents include hippos, giant monitor lizards and spotted neck otters.
Rusinga Island is visited by fly-in fishing safaris – some from the Masai Mara for a day – or by ferry from Homa Bay.
