What the day looks like
Watamu is one of the best places on the East African coast for marine wildlife, and dolphins are a near guaranteed part of the experience. Bottlenose, spinner and humpback dolphins are present year round, often riding the bow wave right alongside the boat, curious and sociable enough that they frequently approach rather than the other way around. Depending on conditions and how the pod is behaving, your guide may bring you in for a chance to snorkel and swim alongside them in the open water, a genuinely different experience from watching from the boat.
Between June and October, the waters here become part of something bigger, the annual humpback whale migration, as whales travel thousands of kilometres from Antarctic feeding grounds to breed and calve in the warmer waters off Kenya. Watching a humpback breach, launching its full weight clear of the water, is genuinely one of the most memorable wildlife sightings available on this coast. Sightings during migration season can’t be guaranteed since these are wild animals on their own schedule, but Watamu is considered one of the best spots in the world for it during this window.
Your boat is skippered by a licensed guide who follows Kenya’s responsible marine mammal watching guidelines, keeping a respectful distance and reading the animals’ behavior rather than chasing a photo, including deciding when it’s safe and appropriate to enter the water. The morning is spent out on the water, with plenty of time to simply watch and wait, this isn’t a rushed tour, it’s built around letting the encounter happen naturally.
We collect you from your hotel and handle everything from there, this tour works well as a highlight day on its own, or paired with a quieter afternoon back on the beach.
