What the day looks like

Fort Jesus is Mombasa’s most visited landmark, and for good reason. Built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to guard the old port, it was designed by an Italian architect and changed hands nine times between competing powers over the centuries, Portuguese, Omani Arab, and eventually British control. That history is exactly what earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011, as one of the best preserved examples of 16th century Portuguese military fortification anywhere in the world. Inside, a museum lays out artefacts spanning Swahili, Arab and colonial history, and the fort’s walls and bastions are worth the walk on their own.

From the fort, a guided walk takes you into Mombasa’s Old Town, narrow streets, carved wooden doors, Swahili and Arab architecture, and a spice market that’s been trading for generations. Along the way, your guide points out landmarks like the Mombasa Tusks on Moi Avenue, built to mark a royal visit and now one of the city’s best known symbols.

We collect you from your hotel, whether you’re staying in Mombasa itself, Diani, or further up the North Coast, and keep the pace comfortable, this is a walking tour through real streets, not a rushed checklist.
