What the day looks like
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Malindi or Watamu, followed by a walk through Malindi’s history. You’ll see the Vasco da Gama Pillar, erected in 1498 and one of the oldest European monuments in Africa, the 15th century Portuguese Chapel, and the narrow streets and Swahili architecture of Malindi Old Town.
From there, a short drive brings you to Robinson Island, a sandbank that appears and disappears with the tide, surrounded by turquoise water and coral reef. At low tide you can walk straight across the sand to reach it, at other times it’s a short boat ride. Swim, snorkel or just relax before a freshly prepared seafood lunch nearby.
The day finishes at Marafa, known locally as Hell’s Kitchen or Nyari, “the place broken by itself.” About 30 kilometres northeast of Malindi, it’s a sandstone gorge carved by erosion into red, yellow and orange cliffs, a landscape that looks more like Mars than the Kenyan coast. Best seen close to sunset, when the colours in the rock are at their strongest.
We collect you from your hotel, keep the pace comfortable, and tailor timings around your day. Families, couples and small groups are all welcome, and the tour can be combined with any Kenya safari itinerary.
