What Makes Amboseli Different From Other Kenya Parks
Amboseli is smaller than the Maasai Mara and less crowded than most parks. That’s exactly why people love it. Wildlife is easy to spot, driving distances are short, and two things make it genuinely one of a kind.
The elephants. Amboseli is home to over 1,500 elephants, including some of Africa’s last Super Tuskers, elephants with tusks so large they nearly reach the ground. Nowhere else offers such close, reliable encounters with them.
Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain sits across the border in Tanzania, but the classic view of its snow capped peak belongs to Amboseli. On clear mornings and late afternoons, it floats above the plains while elephants walk right past it, the most photographed image in African safari.
Over 400 bird species. The swamps at the heart of the park draw flamingos, pelicans, kingfishers and raptors, good birdwatching year round.
Easy to reach from Nairobi. About 4 hours by road, or under an hour by air, a practical choice if you’re short on time.
Wildlife You’ll See on an Amboseli Safari
Amboseli delivers classic safari experiences done well. The park is compact, so you spend less time on the road and more time watching animals.
- Elephants, large multi generational herds, including Super Tuskers, the main reason most people visit
- Lions, reliably spotted in the open grasslands
- Cheetahs, often seen using termite mounds as lookout points
- Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and gazelle, all common and easy to find
- Hippos and crocodiles, in the swamps and seasonal wetlands
- Over 400 bird species, including flamingos, pelicans and birds of prey
Worth knowing before you book: rhinos aren’t found in Amboseli, and leopards are rarely seen. We’d rather tell you that upfront than let you find out on day one.
The Landscape
Amboseli mixes open plains, green swamps fed by Kilimanjaro’s underground springs, acacia forest and volcanic hills, the variety of habitat is a big part of why the wildlife viewing is so good.
How to Get to Amboseli From Nairobi or the Coast
You can reach Amboseli by road or by air. Either way, we arrange everything.
By road from Nairobi. About 4 to 5 hours, through the Athi Plains and into the bush. The road is good, and the scenery is part of the experience.
By air from Nairobi. About 45 minutes to an hour from Wilson Airport. We can book this for you.
From the Kenyan coast. Fly from Mombasa or Diani to Amboseli, via Nairobi or direct depending on the season. We handle the connections.
From the Maasai Mara. Amboseli combines well with the Mara, about an hour by air between the two. Many travellers do both parks in one trip.
Best Time to Visit Amboseli for Clear Kilimanjaro Views
Amboseli is a year round destination, but the experience shifts with the seasons.
June to October. Dry season, excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather at the swamps, clear skies and the best Kilimanjaro views. Also the busiest period.
January to February. Another dry spell, good viewing and clear mountain views, February heat can be intense.
March to May. Long rains. The park turns green, crowds thin out, some roads get muddy, but birdlife is excellent.
November to December. Short rains, green landscape, smaller crowds.
